Screening Night: Guest Judges



Screening Night is a night where all our student and staff film makers, sponsors, family and friends watch the films together. All film makers will be recognized for their participation in our 2nd Annual Film Festival. 


During Screening Night films will be scored in the following areas:



  • Content & Organization
  • Creativity
  • Technical Quality
  • Editing


There are 5 veld groups this year. There will be a winner from each leveled group and then a best of show! The finalist will be announced the following week.

We are so lucky to have 4 guest judges with us this year! Take the time to read their bio. 


Ish Abdus-Saboor is the web content and social media manager for the R2 District Office. She will tell you that getting into schools as often as possible and seeing the amazing learning activities created by teachers is the best part of her job. Before joining the Richland Two family in 2008, she worked as a reporter for The State and The Greenville News newspapers. When she isn't glued to her iPhone or laptop, she enjoys a good book, cooking and trying out ideas from her Pinterest boards. She is married and has one toddler and a bonus child daughter (step daughter).

Ashley Bruton is the Communications Manager for Strategic Partnerships for Richland Two. He will tell you that working with great teachers and fantastic students is the best part of his job. Before joining the Richland Two family in 2006, he served as a Peace Corps Volunteer teaching English at a high school in Poland, worked as reporter with the Horry Independent and earned his master's degree from the University of South Carolina. When he's not working, Ashley enjoys cooking, reading, playing video games and spending time with his wife and two children.

Ron Hagell is a media artist and lecturer; he has had careers in television (PBS and Lifetime) and as an Army officer in Vietnam. Most recently he has been teaching media practice in Germany and at Royal Holloway - University of London, the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and privately in Columbia, SC. Current courses include screenwriting (with the Tapp’s Arts Center), filmmaking, acting (with Trustus) and media art. Ron’s art practice is in photography and film with installations featuring projections, prints and film centered on topics related to Diasporas, women in society and culture as well as a variety of narratives themes and contemporary dance. He has a Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University (NYC) and studied theater, art and photography at RISD, UNC and American University (DC).

Shirley Smith has been an educator for more than 30 years. She began her career as a elementary teacher, subsequently taught at the middle school and university levels before moving to the SCDOE, where she administered several federal and state programs including the Eisenhower Program for Mathematics and Science and the SC Critical Teaching Needs Program for reading and computers. She has served as the technology integration consultant for a USC research team studying a 1:1 implementation in a SC Midlands school district and is a Fulbright Specialist awardee in the area of technology integration. She has also served as a technology specialist for the SC STEM Centers, distance learning director at Roper Mountain Science Center (RMSC), and as a NASA Digital Media Lab Fellow. Prior to the RMSC position, as the Director of Curriculum for SERC (Satellite Education Resource Center), a national consortium of public television stations and departments of education, she created and produced many technology based resources for teachers and students including online courses, teleconferences, video modules, and virtual field trips. She has a Ph.D. in Education from the University of South Carolina.Currently, she partners with Ron Hagell to produce short films that have been entered into film festivals including Expecting Goodness and Jasper.

2nd Annual Film Festival

We are excited to announce the release of our 2nd Annual Richland Two Film Festival. Richland School District Two, in partnership with WeVideo, is hosting the 2nd annual Film Festival! 

We encourage you to participate in this event! This is your chance to show off all your creativity! It is important for students to find a school contact. This could be a homeroom teacher or any other adult who can assist them through this process. Students must have a Richland 2 school contact to proceed. More information about the school contact can be found here

We ask you read through the guidelines, look at the timeline and mark the important dates on your calendar, review all the steps on how to apply and then START working on your video! 

There will be a Screening Night, May 21st at North Springs Elementary for all the videos that make it to the finals. These will be judged and winning videos will be showcased during the SC Midlands Summit June 11, 2015 before the opening Keynote. 

Videos will be judged by a panel of Richland Two employees and community members. There will be one BEST of SHOW winner and one winner per category

Reviewing Videos

We are currently reviewing all videos to make sure they meet guidelines. You will be contacted by May 23rd if your video makes it to screening night. Screening night will be held at North Springs Elementary School on May 29th. The videos will begin showing at 6pm. More details to come!

Screening Night Date Changed & Location Established!

The screening night will take place at North Springs Elementary School May 29 from 6:00pm-7:00pm. 

Videos are due by May 16 and will screened by judges.

The finalist will be contacted by May 23.

FAQ about Screening Night:

What happens in the days prior to screening night? Students will submit their videos by May 16. Once the videos have been received they will go through a preliminary screening process with a judging panel to make sure all guidelines have been met.

What is screening night? Screening night is an event for the finalist to showcase their videos.

How will I know if my video made it to the finals? Your sponsor will receive an email.

Who can I bring to screening night? You can be anyone who would like to watch the videos.

Will prizes be given out at screening night? No, after screening night the videos will go through the final judging phase. Prizes will be given out June 10-June 11 at the SC Midlands Summit. More details to come.

Important Reminders!

Entry forms are coming in from all levels...elementary, middle and high school!

It's the last week of April and entry forms and parent permission forms are due! If you want to be part of the 1st Annual Film Festival make sure you get your parent permission form and entry form submitted.

Here is a form for students who will be using cast members in their video but are not part of the production of the video.
All students who are filmed for the video must have a permission form because the video will be placed online for public viewing and shown to a public audience.

Hello April! You have 30 days to get your entry form submitted with your sponsor! In order to participate in the film festival you MUST have your entry form submitted by April 30! This is your first step for being on your way to the Film Festival. Your video does not have to be submitted until May 16!Oh, and don't forget to get your parent's permission! Awards and....PRIZES

Videos who make it to the finals will be showcased during the Screening Night, May 30! This is a night where families and students can watch these videos. Students and sponsors will be recognized!

After the Screening Night the videos will be judged. The winning videos will be showcased at the SC Midlands Summit June 10-June 11. Students will be given awards and prizes will be distributed!
